When you think of influential fantasy/horror author H.P. Lovecraft, “family-friendly” probably isn’t the first phrase that comes to mind – yet Howard Lovecraft and the Frozen Kingdom is just that. The PG-rated, computer-animated feature is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, inspired by Lovecraft’s life and writings. It’s a concept so weird that it works.
The story takes place in 1987, long before H.P. Lovecraft became a renowned author. He’s just a lonely, 7-year-old boy named Howard (voiced by Kiefer O’Reilly, Legends of Tomorrow) living with his mother, Mary (Michelle O’Reilly). They visit Howard’s father, Winfield (Tyler Nicol), who is in a mental institution under the care of Dr. West (Christopher Plummer, Up). Amidst his seemingly nonsensical ramblings, Winfield pleads with Howard to destroy the Necronomicon.
